Rich Wells was born in the coal-mining region of Eastern Kentucky.At age two, his parents moved to Dayton, Ohio (go OSU Buckeyes!!) where he grew up and worked for 41 years. He had spent eight years in southeast Michigan in a small suburb city called Grand Blanc, about one hour drive northwest of Detroit. He arrived in Searcy in 2008. This school year, begins another year of a second career as a full time faculty member in the Department of Engineering and Physics at Harding.
He and Cindy were married 38 years and 3+ kids ago. Aimee lives in the Searcy area. Emily and her husband Brad live in Oklahoma City. John lives in the Searcy area.
Rich graduated with a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering at what is now called Kettering University and has a Masters in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Dayton. He recently completed a MBA from Harding.
At the end of 2007, He retired after thirty-two years at General Motors and Delphi Corporation (which split off from General Motors in 1999). He has supervised engineering groups and led various multi-functional teams for the last 25 years. In the mid nineties, he managed an engineering group responsible for the world's first production "by-wire" braking system on the General Motors EV1 electric vehicle. During the last eight years, his role was strategic planner and global coordinator for Engineering Computer Simulation activities at twelve technical centers in North America, Europe, and Asia.
Rich has participated in ten medical mission trips to Central America since 1991. He was team leader or co-leader in three of the trips. The work takes a small M.A.S.H. like unit to the poorer regions and sets up a medical clinic for a week at a time. They see 500 patients each day and host a gospel meeting each evening. They average about five baptisms each day in the field. If Rich had the money, he would do it full time. He has also been a Bible class teacher for 30 years. He was previously a deacon and education director at Swartz Creek church of Christ in Swartz Creek, Michigan.
